Making his first start in more than five months, Shivers Me won the $50,000 Inaugural Handicap on Saturday, as SunRay Park opened its 48-day meet in front of a crowd of 2,750.
Shivers Me went 6 ½ furlongs in 1:17.47 under jockey Vernon Scantling, who was riding the 5-year-old stallion for the first time in his 15-race career. Ty Garrett saddled Shivers Me for owners Jeff Haylett and Jason Haylett.
Shivers Me was bred in Idaho by Vickie Cook. His sire, Coastal Voyage, is a Grade 3-winning son of the Majestic Prince stallion Coastal, and he has sired 27 winners from 43 starters and the earners of more than $1.5 million. Shivers me represents his first stakes winner.
Shivers Me's dam, Crypt's Tail, is a 20-year-old daughter of 1987 Florida Derby (G1) winner Cryptoclearance.
All told, Shivers Me has won seven of 15 starts, and the $30,000 winner's share of the Inaugural Handicap purse pushed his bankroll to $117,851. He won four of seven races last year, including the 1 1/8-mile, $40,000 New Mexico State Fair Handicap at The Downs at Albuquerque, and the 7-furlong, $32,000 Front Range Stakes at Arapahoe Park near Denver.
All Man finished second, a neck behind Shivers Me, and was followed by Vamoose, Evansville Van, Talk Circuit, Miller's Time, Major Billy, Tactful, and Redhotracer.
An 8-year-old gelding by Petionville racing for Nick Morris, All Man has earned $345,462 from 10 wins in 40 outs. He was six weeks removed from a 3 3/4-length, 5 1/2-furlong victory against starter allowance company at Sunland Park.
Finishing 4 ¼ lengths behind Shivers Me, Vamoose earned $5,000 to increase his bankroll to $52,645. The homebred 4-year-old Petionville gelding, who races for Everest Stables Inc., has won three races in nine starts, two of which came against allowance company at Zia Park last fall.
