RSS Feeds Sunday, December 27, 2015

A total of 36 New Mexico-bred 2-year-olds, including three graded stakes winners, has been entered in Monday’s 400-yard Shue Fly Stakes (RG2) trials at Sunland Park.

The 10 fastest qualifiers will meet in the $95,000-added final on January 17.

The three graded stakes winners -- Chickaloni, Im A Moon Quest, and RG Miracle -- will race in the second, third, and fourth trials, respectively. A sorrel daughter of Jess A Chicks trained by Lori Chavez for owners Ross Hinkins and David Hinkins of Orangevale, Utah, Chickaloni will be making her first start since November 1, when the filly scored a neck victory in the 400-yard, $281,000 New Mexico Cup Futurity (RG2) at Zia Park.

Chickaloni was acquired by the Hinkins brothers from breeders Dosi and Norma Alvarez for $7,500 at last year’s New Mexico-Bred Yearling Sale at Ruidoso Downs. Jose Enrique Ortiz will ride the filly from post 3 on Monday.

Im A Moon Quest races for Santos Espinosa and Marc Jungers from the barn of Justin Joiner. A gelded son of champion First Moonflash and a $42,000 buy at last year’s New Mexico-Bred Yearling Sale, Im A Moon Quest has earned $166,017 from five outs this season. His two wins include an upset victory at odds of 14-1 in the July 26, $380,000 Zia Futurity (RG1) at Ruidoso Downs.

Cody Jensen will ride Im A Moon Quest from post 2. The gelding’s opponents in the third heat include Frank N Jesse, a Jesse James Jr gelding trained by Greg Green for owners Renee Carter and Jaye Huseman. Frank N Jesse is coming off of a second-place finish to Chickaloni in the New Mexico Cup Futurity.

RG Miracle is a homebred gray son of Hearts Miracle trained by Ken Grisham for owner Shirley Grisham of Albuquerque. The gelding has won his last three races, including the August 23, 350-yard New Mexico Breeders’ Futurity (RG3) at SunRay Park, and the September 27, 400-yard Downs at Albuquerque Futurity (R).

RG Miracle drew post 7 and will be ridden by Ivan Carnero on Monday. His eight opponents in heat 4 include Jose Luis Ozuna’s Flash Of Love, a gelded son of First Moonflash trained by Paul Jones. An All American (G1) and Rainbow (G1) futurity trial winner at Ruidoso Downs last summer, Flash Of Love will be returning to New Mexico off of a second-place finish in a Texas Classic Futurity (G1) trial at Lone Star Park in October.
