RSS Feeds Tuesday, December 27, 2016
Sent to post as the 1-5 favorite in a field of nine New Mexico-bred 2-year-old fillies, R.D. Hubbard’s Sippin rallied to win Tuesday’s $85,000 La Senora Stakes (R) at Sunland Park.

Sippin closed on the fractions of :21.78 and :44.76 established by pacesetter Rational Decision, and the homebred chestnut filly reached the wire in 1:10.55 while defeating 17-1 longshot Rappakuba by a half of a length. Tracy Hebert rode the undefeated filly for trainer Todd Fincher.

Sippin was making her first start since October 30, when she rallied to score a 1 3/4-length victory in the 6-furlong, $140,000 New Mexico Cup Lassie Championship (R) at Zia Park. The filly is the first stakes winner from 15 Thoroughbred starters sired by Swissle Stick. A multiple stakes placed 14-year-old son of the Eastern Echo stallion Swiss Yodeler and the unraced Siyah Kalem mare Miss Soft Sell, Swissle Stick has sired the Thoroughbred earners of more than $331,000.

Swissle Stick was bred in California and is a half brother to three stakes winners, including 2006 Santa Anita Derby (G1) winner Brother Derek. The stallion is owned by and stands for a $1,000 fee at Mac and Janis Murray’s MJ Farms at Veguita, New Mexico.

Sippin is also one of four winners from six starters produced by Samba Queen, a 13-year-old Kentucky-bred daughter of the Storm Cat stallion Giant’s Causeway. The filly is a half sister to Mancation, the winner of the 1 1/16-mile New Mexico Breeders’ Derby (R) at Sunland Park in 2014.

Sippin’s second dam, the Baronius (BRZ) mare Misty Moon (BRZ), foaled three stakes winners, all of whom are half sisters to Samba Queen, including Virginie, a multiple graded stakes winner who won the ’99 Beverly Hills Handicap (G1) on the turf at Hollywood Park.

Sippin traces back to her fourth dam, the winning Cohoes mare Fashion Plate. A 1965 foal, Fashion Plate was a half sister to multiple stakes winner Swiss Cheese.

Raced exclusively in New Mexico, Sippin has won all six of her outs, and the $51,000 winner’s share of the La Senora Stakes purse pushed her bankroll to $268,047. The filly has won four stakes, including the 6-furlong, $50,000 Permian Basin Stakes against open juvenile fillies at Zia Park.

Sippin returned a $2.40 win mutuel and teamed with Rational Decision for a $2 exacta payoff of $16.40. Ivy Gimlet, the 6-1 third choice, ran third, 3 1/3 lengths behind Sippin, to complete a $45.90 ($1) trifecta.

Pink Cadillac, Rational Decision, Miss Twister, Proud Cecilia, Fastinating Allie, and Ritzy Waon completed the order of finish.

Rational Decision is a homebred daughter of the Artax stallion Diabolical campaigned by J. Kirk and Judy Robison of El Paso, Texas. The filly has earned $17,000 from three outs.

Ivy Gimlet also races for the Robisons and is a homebred filly by Diabolical out of the Grade 3-winning Bernstein mare Toll Taker. Ivy Gimlet has won one of five starts, and the $8,500 third-place share of the La Senora purse pushed her bankroll to $35,180.
