Sixes Royal Colt is Fastest NM Spring Futurity Qualifier
RSS Feeds Friday, March 15, 2013

Moonifisant, a colt by Sixes Royal and half brother to 2009 AQHA champion aged stallion First Moonflash, is the fastest qualifier for the April 7, $231,306 New Mexican Spring Futurity (RG2) at Sunland Park.

Ridden by Jaime Leos in the last of 11 trials on Friday, Moonifisant covered 300 yards in :15.007 while defeating non-qualifier Break The Spell by three lengths. Juan M. Gonzalez trains the colt for owners Peter B. Gallegos, Robert Sanchez, and Patricia Gonzalez.

Moonifisant was bred by Dosi and Norma Alvarez of La Union, New Mexico. The colt was making his second career start and first since March 1, when he scored a neck victory as the 2-1 favorite in a 300-yard sprint for state-bred 2-year-old maidens.

Second-fastest qualifier Woodys Allstar made her career debut with a 1 1/2-length win in the fourth trial. Reigning AQHA champion jockey G.R. Carter Jr. rode the Woodbridge filly for owners Joe Dee Brooks, Ted Rushing, Scott Bryant, and Lee Lewis, and trainer Mike Joiner.

An $8,000 purchase at last year's New Mexico Bred Yearling Sale at Ruidoso Downs, Woodys Allstar was bred by Mac and Janis Spencer Murray's MJ Farms at Veguita, New Mexico. MJ Farms bred five of the 10 finalists.

Past winners of the New Mexican Spring Futurity include PJ Chick In Black, last year's AQHA champion 2-year-old filly. The complete list of qualifiers for this year's Spring Futurity appears below:
