Smafricate Breaks Maiden in State Fair Senorita Futurity Trials

Smafricate, a gray daughter of the Runaway Winner stallion Streakaway Cash, won the second of three New Mexico State Fair Senorita Futurity (RG3) trials at The Downs at Albuquerque on Friday and is the fastest qualifier to the September 22 final.

Racing for the Estate of T. Jerry Lee and trained by Judy Bachicha, Smafricate covered 400 yards in :19.681 under jockey Elliot Bachicha Jr., and her margin of victory was a neck from defeating second-fastest qualifier Ofashionsoutherngirl. The filly's win was her first in four starts, and it increased her earnings to $3,913.

Ofashionsoutherngirl is a homebred filly by Southern Corona owned by Rita Danley and trained by Fred Danley. Ofashionsoutherngirl has banked $2,614 from four outs.

Third-fastest qualifier Seis Of Hearts won the first trial by a nose in :19.733. A bay daughter of Sixes Royal owned and trained by Jesus Marquez, Seis Of Hearts has earned $4,666 from two races.

Astica, a homebred daughter of Jesse James Jr and champion Alice K White, will face older distaffers for the first time in Wednesday’s 400-yard, $140,000-added New Mexico Filly and Mare Championship (RG1) at Zia Park. The New Mexico Filly and Mare Championship is one of two state-bred stakes and eight stakes scheduled for Wednesday’s third annual “Land of Enchantment” Day program at Zia Park. Post time for the first of 11 races is set for 12:15 p.m. (MST).
