Smash Dancer Tops Field in Mt. Cristo Rey

Smash Dancer, a homebred 5-year-old Robyn Dancer gelding racing for Barbara M. Coleman of Farmington, is the morning-line favorite in Saturday's 4 1/2-furlong, $110,000 Mt. Cristo Rey Handicap (R) for New Mexico-breds at Sunland Park.

Racing exclusively in New Mexico, Smash Dancer has earned $269,388 from 19 starts, and his six victories include the 2010 New Mexico Cup Sprint Championship (R) at Zia Park. He also scored a three-quarter length victory as the odds-on favorite in a 5 1/2-furlong allowance-optional claiming sprint at Sunland on December 27.

Smash Dancer's opponents in the Mt. Cristo Rey include Our Choice. A 7-year-old gelding by Desert God owned by Stable HMA, Our Choice has won two races during the current Sunland meet, and his nine wins in 44 outs include last year's 7-furlong, $50,000 E.T. Springer Stakes (R) during the New Mexico State Fair portion of The Downs at Albuquerque meet.

Another Mt. Cristo Rey contender, Ray Simpson's Thenew Normal, will be making his first start since July 31, when he won the 5 1/2-furlong, $50,000 Road Runner Handicap (R) for state-breds at Ruidoso Downs. The homebred 4-year-old gelding by Avenue Of Flags has won three of four races and has earned $57,058, and the Mt. Cristo Rey will mark his first start at Sunland Park.
