RSS Feeds Sunday, July 04, 2010

The only 3-year-old in the field of seven, Rogers Farms’ Tizsosexy led from start to finish to win the $100,000 San Juan County Commissioners Handicap at SunRay Park on Sunday.

Tizsosexy was saddled by Gerald Richards and ridden by Enrique Garcia, who guided the California-bred gelding by Tizbud through fractions of :25.42, :48.23, and 1:12.77. Reaching the wire 1 ½ lengths ahead of  5-2 second choice Guiding Hand, Tizsosexy covered his 1 1/8-mile trip in 1:51.12 and returned a $13 win mutuel as the 5-1 fourth choice in the wagering.

Tizsosexy was claimed by his current connections at Sunland Park for $10,000 on April 9, and he has since won two stakes, including the one-mile, $50,000 SunRay Park and Casino Handicap for 3-year-olds on June 6. The $60,000 winner’s share of Sunday’s purse increased his earnings to $100,997, of which $90,000 has come since the claim.

“I’d watched this horse in a couple of his race before the claim, and I was impressed by his size and his stride,” said Richards. “We had no plans to win two stakes before we got up here to Farmington. It just worked out that way.”

Bred by Pamela Ziebarth, Tizsosexy is the first stakes winner from 16 starters sired by Tizbud, a stakes-winning son of the Relaunch stallion Cee’s Tizzy and a full brother to three stakes winners, including two-time Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) winner and 2000 horse of the year Tiznow. The 11-year-old stallion, who won the $250,000 California Cup Classic Handicap (R) at Santa Anita in ’03, has sired the earners of more than $210,900 from three crops. He stands for a $3,000 fee at Harris Farms near Coalinga, California.

Tizsosexy is also the first starter foaled by the unraced 9-year-old Western Fame mare Zero To Sexy. The gelding’s third dam, Petite Maid, was a winning daughter of Quack who produced 11 winners from 13 starters, including stakes winner and 1986 Budweiser Tampa Bay Derby (G3) runner-up Lucky Rebeau.

A 1978 foal, Petite Maid was a half sister to Protect Yourself, a colt by Lord Rebeau who won the 1985 Longacres Derby (G3) and ran third in the ’90 Cornhusker Handicap (G3) at old Ak-Sar-Ben Racetrack in Omaha, Nebraska.

Tizsosexy has raced exclusively in New Mexico, and the gelding has won three of his seven outs, including a $12,500 maiden claimer going one mile at Sunland on February 27.

Quiet Again, the 8-5 favorite, ran third and was followed by Putthehammerdown, Infinite Resource, Summertime Sal, and El Vic.

Runner-up Guiding Hand earned $22,000 for his owners, Simply The Best Thoroughbreds of Temecula, California, and Henry Dominguez, who also trains the stakes-winning 7-year-old gelding by Helmsman. A $12,500 claim by Dominguez on February 20, Guiding Hand since earned $46,140 from four starts. All told, the gelding has banked $318,083 from 48 outs, and his 11 wins include the ’07 Winsham Lad Handicap at Sunland Park.

Quiet Again was making his first start at SunRay and coming off of a third-place finish in the 6-furlong, $50,000 Carter McGregor Jr. Memorial Handicap (R) for Texas-breds at Lone Star Park on May 31. The stakes-winning 7-year-old gelding by Real Quiet earned $10,000 to push his bankroll to $327,868 for owner and breeder Paul Bruce Thomason of Anthony, New Mexico.
