Special Leader Colt Posts Fastest Four Corners Futurity Qualifying Time
RSS Feeds Friday, June 04, 2010

The Essentials, a Texas-bred colt by 1991 world champion Special Leader, outran his 8-1 odds to win the last of four Four Corners Futurity (G3) trials at SunRay Park on Thursday.

Racing for Fun 4 Racing and prepped by Bennie L. “Chip” Woolley Jr., The Essentials covered 350 yards in :17.409 while recording his first win in three outs and the fastest qualifying time for the $40,000-added Four Corners final on June 19. Tony Guymon rode The Essentials, as the colt defeated second-fastest qualifier W R Carver by a nose and recorded a lifetime-best 93 speed index.

The Essentials was bred in Texas by Joe Kirk Fulton of Lubbock, and the colt became the 471st winner from 717 starters sired by Special Leader, a 23-year-old son of 1981 world champion Special Effort who won two Grade 1 races in ’91, including the Champion of Champions at Los Alamitos. Special Leader has sired the earners of more than $12.09 million from 16 crops. He stands at Vaughn Cook’s Royal Vista Equine at Ft. Collins, Colorado.

The Essentials is also one of two starters produced by his dam, the unraced Eyesa Special mare Fashionismyattitude. The colt’s second dam, the winning Streakin La Jolla mare Fashionisanattitude, ran second in Eyesa Special’s 2000 All American Futurity (G1).

The runner-up in the April 17, $50,000 West Texas Juvenile Invitational Stakes at Sunland Park, W R Carver is one of three finalists trained by Wes Giles. The homebred sorrel gelding by Wave Carver races for Rose Webb of Farmington, New Mexico, who won last weekend’s $172,100 New Mexico Breeders’ Futurity (RG2) with her homebred W R Aces Fame.
