RSS Feeds Saturday, September 11, 2010

Spice Girl, a homebred bay filly owned and trained by Raymond Carlisle Jr., won the last of four New Mexico State Fair Senorita Futurity (RG3) trials on Friday and posted the fastest qualifying time for the September 25, $40,000-added final at The Downs at Albuquerque.

Ridden by Mark Villa and sent to post as the 9-10 favorite, Spice Girl defeated 22-1 longshot Posies First Thought by a half of a length while going 400 yards in :19.564. The filly’s victory was her first in four races, and she was coming off of a fifth-place finish in the $351,963 Zia Futurity (RG1) at Ruidoso Downs on August 1.

Spice Girl is one of nine winners from 25 starters sired by Sum Fun To Bet, a winning and stakes-placed son of Strawfly Special and whose dam, the First Down Dash mare Down With Debt, was the AQHA world champion in 1994. The filly is also one of six winners from seven starters foaled by Mackeys Girl, a winning South Dakota-bred daughter of the What Luck (TB) stallion Mackeys Girl .

Spice Girl is a half sister to two stakes winners, including Tunes, a filly by Winning Rhythm who won three graded stakes from 2007-08, including the ’07 New Mexico Cup Futurity (RG1) at Zia Park.

Carlisle also bred, owns, and trains the second-fastest qualifier, Fun N Luck. A sorrel filly by Sum Fun To Bet, Fun N Luck won the third heat by a half of a length for her second victory in four starts.
