RSS Feeds Friday, June 20, 2014
Raider Red will be shooting for his second career stakes victory in Saturday’s 5-furlong, $155,995 Mountain Top Thoroughbred Futurity (R) for New Mexico-bred 2-year-olds at Ruidoso Downs.

A homebred gelding by Diabolical racing for Brad King and Dale Taylor, Raider Red has earned $44,226 from three starts, and his two wins include a 3 1/2-length score in the colts and geldings division of the April 12, 4 1/2-furlong Copper Top Futurity (R) at Sunland Park.

Raider Red is coming off of a third-place finish in the third of three Mountain Top trials on June 6. The gelding is trained by Todd Fincher, and Roman Chapa has been named to ride him from post 2 in the Mountain Top final.

Raider Red’s nine opponents include the undefeated Malibu Rain and Liberty Lover, a 3 1/2-length winner of the second trial in his career debut.

Malibu Rain was purchased by Joe Dee Brooks, Dale Taylor, and Scott Bryant for $16,000 at last year’s New Mexico-Bred Sale at Ruidoso Downs. The gelded son of Devon Lane and half brother to two-time stakes winner Awintersdream has won both of his outs, including the first Mountain Top trial, and has banked $16,140.

Todd Fincher trains Malibu Rain, who will be ridden by Alfredo Juarez Jr. from post 5 on Saturday.

A homebred colt by Diabolical campaigned by J. Kirk and Judy Robison of El Paso, Texas, Liberty Lover races from the barn of Henry Dominguez. Liberty Lover has earned $3,600, and his dam, the Forest Wildcat mare Wildcat Diva, is a half sister to Capdiva, a Capote filly who won the $259,130 Canadian Oaks (R) at Woodbine in 1997.

The complete lineup for the Mountain Top Thoroughbred Futurity, in post position order including jockey assignments and morning-line odds -- Mesa Cat (Brayan Velazquez), 20-1; Raider Red (Roman Chapa), 6-1; Liberty Lover (Enrique P. Gomez), 5-2; Domer Simpson (Ricardo Jaime), 20-1; Malibu Rain (Alfredo Juarez Jr.), 5-2; Roll On Red Raider (Aldo Arboleda), 6-1; Diabolical Dame (Dusty Shepherd), 6-1; Truth In Science (Alejandro Medellin), 20-1; Sunday Polka (Carlos Madeira), 15-1; and Lux (Ruby Gonzalez), 8-1.
