Stel Corona Colt is Fastest Zia Futurity Qualifier

Erasmus B Dragon, a homebred Stel Corona colt owned and trained by Paul Jones, on Friday posted the fastest qualifying time for the July 31 Zia Futurity (RG1) for New Mexico-bred 2-year-olds at Ruidoso Downs.

Ridden by Esgar Ramirez and sent to post as the 2-1 second choice, Erasmus B Dragon won the seventh of nine trials by 2 ½ lengths from New Mexican Spring Futurity (RG2) finalist Silver Spike. The colt went 400 yards on a sealed track labeled “wet fast” in :19.519, earning a 96 speed index and his first victory in three outs.

Second-fastest qualifier First Blazin Love won heat 3 by two lengths from 10th-fastest qualifier Cheetah Woods. Trained by Jones and ridden by G.R. Carter for owners D. Johnson, Lisa Saumell, and Sammy Martinez,, the chestnut colt by Chicks A Blazin covered 400 yards in :19.546 while scoring his second victory in as many starts.

Sammy James, the winner of the June 19 Mountain Top Futurity (RG2), won the fourth trial by three-quarters of a length but failed to qualify.

This year's Zia Futurity final will be worth a stakes-record $384,030. The complete list of qualifiers appears below:
