Esgar Ramirez rode Stel Gone Corona to a wire-to-wire, head victory in the $120,000 New Mexico Horse Breeders' Association Stakes (RG2) for state-bred 3-year-olds at Sunland Park on Sunday.
Prepped by Jose Gonzalez Sr. for owner Grisel Ochoa, Stel Gone Corona went 350 yards in :19.215 while scoring his fourth consecutive win. The Stel Corona gelding returned an $8.60 win mutuel as the 3-1 second choice.
Stel Gone Corona was bred by Double A Ranch, and the gelding became the fourth stakes winner from 33 starters sired by Stel Corona, an 11-year-old son of the Holland Ease stallion Corona Cartel and winner of the 2003 PCQHRA Breeders' Derby (G2) at Los Alamitos. Stel Corona has sired the earners of more than $2.2 million from four crops, including 2008 AQHA champion 2-year-old colt and Grade 1 winner Foose. He stands at Burns Ranch in Menifee, California.
Stel Gone Corona's dam, Meter Her Gone, is a winning 10-year-old daughter of champion Meter Me Gone who has produced two winners from three starters, including '09 New Mexico Breeders' Futurity (RG2) finalist Her Sixes Royal, a half sister to Stel Gone Corona. The gelding's second dam, the winning Raise A Secret mare Secret Hustler has foaled four winners from seven starters, including Hustle To The Lead, a half brother to Meter Her Gone who ran second in the 2005 Cherry Creek Futurity (RG3) for Colorado-breds at Arapahoe Park and third in the '06 West Texas Derby (G2) at Sunland Park.
Stel Gone Corona's third dam, the winning California-bred Easy Jet mare Easy Hustler, produced On The Hustle, a filly by Victory Stride (TB) who qualified for the 1989 Golden State Futurity (G1) at Los Alamitos and '90 La Primera del Ano Derby (G1) at Bay Meadows. The gelding traces back to his fourth dam, Crimson Hustler, a winning and stakes-placed daughter of three-time world champion Go Man Go who foaled Crimson Angel, a filly by Alamitos Bar who ran third in the $110,700 Kindergarten Futurity at Los Alamitos in 1974.
Stel Gone Corona began his career with a seventh-place finish in a 300-yard New Mexican Spring Futurity (RG1) trial at Sunland on March 26, 2010. The gelding has since won all of his starts, including a 400-yard, $34,900 allowance sprint as the 2-1 favorite at Sunland on January 21.
The NMHBA Stakes represented Stel Gone Corona's first stakes victory.
