Storm Chasor Posts Fastest New Mexico Cup Derby Trial Time

Joan Dale Hubbard’s Storm Chasor won the last of three New Mexico Cup Derby (RG2) trials at Zia Park on Sunday, and the homebred gelding by Attila’s Storm (TB) recorded the fastest qualifying time for the $200,000-est. final on October 27.

Trained by Paul Jones and ridden by Saul Ramirez Jr., Storm Chasor covered 440 yards on a sloppy and sealed track in :21.593 behind a 12-mph tail wind. His margin of victory was a head from second-fastest qualifier Runin Sixes.

Storm Chasor has won four of 10 outs and has earned $44,797 while racing exclusively in New Mexico. The gelding was making his first start since July 28, when he ran third, a half of a length behind winner Junior June Bug, in the 400-yard, $128,375 Zia Derby (RG2) at Ruidoso Downs.

Runin Sixes has won three of 14 races and has banked $105,425 for owners Peter B. Gallegos, Valle Guadiana Corp., and Patricia Gonzalez. The gray daughter of Sixes Royal ran second in the April 13, $85,000 Sunburst Stakes (R) for New Mexico-bred 3-year-old fillies at Sunland Park.
