Stormin Creek Rallies for Foutz Distaff Win
RSS Feeds Thursday, April 28, 2016
Pacifica West Stables’ Stormin Creek came from off the pace to win Monday’s $44,800 Russell and Helen Foutz Distaff Handicap (R) for New Mexico-bred fillies and mares at SunRay Park.

Ridden by Norberto Arroyo Jr. for trainer Dick Cappelucci, Stormin Creek rallied off of the fractions of :23.02 and :46.15 established by pacesetters My Bikini Fell Off and Misscharlypotatoes. The 6-year-old mare stopped the timer in 1:18.43, and her margin of victory was 2 1/4 lengths from My Bikini Fell Off.

Stormin Creek was bred by Thomas W. Pierce III. The mare’s sire, the Clever Trick stallion Tricky Creek, has sired 16 official black-type stakes winners and the earners of more than $15.8 million from 336 starters.

A 1986 Kentucky-bred foal, Tricky Creek raced at 19 tracks in 11 states from 1988-91, and he earned $873,288 from 37 starts. The stallion’s nine wins included Grade 2 victories at Churchill Downs, Belmont Park, and Aqueduct.

Stormin Creek is the first starter produced by Stormin Brigade, a winning 12-year-old daughter of the graded stakes placed Storm Cat stallion Gen Stormin’norman who ran second to Wagner’s Gold in the 6-furlong, $67,200 Permian Basin Stakes at Zia Park in ’06. Stormin Brigade is a half sister to Rebridled Dreams, an Unbridled’s Song mare who won the 2003 Money Penny Stakes at Hawthorne Racecourse near Chicago and ran third in that season’s Grade 3, $150,000 Silverbulletday Stakes at Fair Grounds.

Stormin Creek’s second dam, the Corridor Key mare Key Cents, won a pair of New York-bred stakes at Belmont Park in ’98, including the $125,000 Iroquois Handicap (R). Stormin Creek traces back to her fourth dam, Penny One, a Kentucky-bred daughter of the Turn-to stallion Best Turn who foaled 1986 Philadelphia Park stakes winner Onproviso.

Campaigned exclusively in New Mexico, Stormin Creek has won 11 of 35 outs, and the $26,880 winner’s share of the Russell and Helen Foutz Handicap purse pushed her earnings to $187,012. The mare’s resume includes a second-place finish, two lengths behind My Dandy Girl, in last year’s 1-mile, $180,980 Peppers Pride New Mexico Cup Fillies and Mares Championship (R) at Zia Park.

Little Vidalia ran third, 3 3/4 lengths behind Stormin Creek, and was followed by Misscharlypotatoes and Sherry’s Jewel.

My Bikini Fell Off is a 5-year-old daughter of the Elusive Quality stallion Elusive Jazz racing for Brian Mundell, who also bred the mare. My Bikini Fell Off has won six of her 18 starts and has earned $263,032, and her two stakes victories include the 6-furlong, $85,000 New Mexico State Racing Commission Handicap (R) at Sunland Park on December 20.

A 7-year-old Attila’s Storm mare campaigned by J Bar 7 Ranch LLC, Little Vidalia has banked $366,793, and her seven wins in 32 races include the 2014 New Mexico Cup Filly and Mare Sprint Championship (R) at Zia Park.
