The Quarter Horse Streak Of Sixes and Thoroughbred Glory Be Mine added to their impressive resumes during Sunday’s $1.977-million New Mexico Cup program at Zia Park in Hobbs.
Racing for Pete and Marjorie Gallegos and one of five finalists qualified by trainer Juan M. Gonzalez, Streak Of Sixes sprinted to a 1 ½-length victory as the 13-10 favorite in the 400-yard, $294,276 New Mexico Cup Quarter Horse Futurity (RG2). The win was the Sixes Royal filly’s third in a graded futurity this season, and the winner’s share of the purse increased her earnings to $479,405.
Glory Be Mine was sent to post as the 3-5 choice in the 6-furlong, $151,575 New Mexico Cup Fillies Championship, and the 3-year-old chestnut daughter of Dome responded with a half-length victory for her seventh consecutive win. Racing for Bobby McQueen and Dale Taylor and trained by Todd Fincher, Glory Be Mine traces her streak, which includes five stakes victories, back to July 11, 2009.
A crowd announced at 3,190 attended the New Mexico Cup program, which included seven Thoroughbred and four Quarter Horse stakes, an increase of nearly 7 percent over last year’s announced attendance of 2,985. Also, a total of $727,704 was wagered on the 11-race card, an increase of nearly 33 percent over last year’s handle of $548,703 for the same number of races.
Purses officially totaled $1,977,930, compared to $2,023,808 in 2009. Last year’s New Mexico Cup program was the richest state-bred day of racing in North America.
