RSS Feeds Sunday, February 20, 2011

Strike It Quick won the second of three West Texas Maturity (G2) trials at Sunland Park on Friday, posting the fastest qualifying time for the March 5, $65,000-added final.

Ridden by Freddie Martinez for owner Jesse Hernandez Consulting Inc. and trainer Jose Gonzalez Sr., Strike It Quick covered 400 yards in :18.929 while defeating second-fastest qualifier Calif Fugitive by three-quarters of a length. The 5-year-old gray gelding by Royal Quick Dash was recording his 10th win in 25 starts, and the winner's share of the purse increased his earnings to $223,622.

Strike It Quick was bred in Utah by Lee Giles and Steve McIntyre. The gelding has raced primarily in New Mexico, and his stakes resume includes a three-quarter length victory in the January 29, 350-yard KOFX-FM Handicap (G2), and a three-quarter length win in last year's 350-yard James Isaac Hobbs Stakes (G2) at Zia Park.

Calif Fugitive is a 5-year-old Hawkinson gelding campaigned by J & L Stables LLC and Fredda Draper and trained by Carl Draper. An earner of $158,323 from three wins in 11 outs, Calif Fugitive was a finalist in world champion Stolis Winner's 2008 All American Futurity (G1).
