Sunday NM-Bred Stakes Doubleheader Set for Sunland Park

Two New Mexico-bred stakes -- one for Thoroughbreds and one for Quarter Horses -- will top the 11-race program at Sunland Park on Sunday.

Both of the stakes drew overflow fields of 12, including two also-eligible entries.

WDC Wendys Wine, a 4-year-old mare by the Dash Ta Fame stallion Woodbridge, is the 7-2 morning-line favorite in the 400-yard, $85,000 Lou Wooten/Sydney Valentini Stakes (RG1) for state-bred distaffers. Racing for Sylvia Aranda and trainer Alonzo Aranda, WDC Wendys Wine is coming off of a third-place finish as the 5-2 choice in the 400-yard, $140,000 New Mexico Fillies & Mares Championship (RG1) at Zia Park on November 27.

WDC Wendys Wine has earned $128,888 from 19 starts, and the mare’s stakes record includes a second-place finish to Send Me A Candy Tree in the 400-yard, $55,000 Lubbock Stakes (G3) at Zia Park on September 28.

Alejandro Medellin will ride WDC Wendys Wine from post 6 on Sunday.

Other contenders include Runin Sixes, a 3-year-old filly by Sixes Royal owned by Peter B. Gallegos, Valle Guadiana Corp., and Patricia Gonzalez. Runin Sixes ran second, 1 1/2 lengths behind winner Jess Rueben James, in the October 27, $199,000 New Mexico Cup Derby (RG2) at Zia Park.

The Lou Wooten/Sydney Valentini Stakes will be the fourth race on the program. Estimated post time is 1:30 p.m. (MST).

Sunday’s 1-mile, $85,000 Enchantress Stakes (R) has drawn a full field of 12 New Mexico-bred 2-year-old fillies, including two also-eligible entries.

Lady Genius, the 9-5 morning-line favorite, has won five of her seven outs for owners W.D. Carson Sr., M.H. Carson, and Leach Racing LLC. A homebred daughter of Quinton’s Gold trained by Dallas Barton, Lady Genius outran her 9-1 odds to score a 4 1/4-length victory in the 1-mile, $140,000 New Mexico Eddy County Stakes (R) for 2-year-olds at Zia Park on November 27.

All told, Lady Genius has banked $251,336, and her race record includes three stakes wins. Carlos Madeira will ride the filly from post 2 on Sunday.

J. Kirk and Judy Robison’s That’s The Idea is the 2-1 morning-line second choice. A homebred filly by Diabolical conditioned by Henry Dominguez, That’s The Idea has won two stakes this season, including the 6-furlong, $140,000 New Mexico Cup Juvenile Fillies Stakes (R) at Zia Park on October 27.

The Enchantress Stakes will go as the 10th race on Sunday. Estimated post time is 4:04 p.m. (MST).
