Thermal Tops Field in Eddy County Stakes

R.D. Hubbard's Thermal, a homebred gelding by Attila's Storm, is the 7-2 morning-line favorite for Sunday's 1-mile, $120,000 New Mexico Eddy County Stakes (R) for state-bred 2-year-olds at Zia Park.

Trained by Todd Fincher and ridden by Duane “Lefty” Sterling in all six of his starts, Thermal has won four races, including the 6-furlong, $140,000 New Mexico Cup Juvenile Colts & Geldings Stakes (R) on October 28, and the 5-furlong, $135,000 Mountain Top Futurity (R) at Ruidoso Downs on June 23. The gelding has earned $170,497.

Other contenders include Indication N M. A $16,000 buy at last year's New Mexico-Bred Yearling Sale at Ruidoso Downs, Indication N M has banked $103,945 from seven outs for his owners, Robert F. Haynsworth and J & SM Inc., and his four victories include a three-quarter length win against open company in the 6-furlong, $55,000 Governor's Cup Stakes at Zia Park on October 13.

Trained by Fred Danley, Indication N M finished second, three lengths behind Thermal, in the New Mexico Cup Juvenile Colts & Geldings Stakes.

The New Mexico Eddy County Stakes is just one of four stakes scheduled on Zia Park's 11-race program. Estimated post time for the stakes is 3:43 p.m. (MST).

Astica, a homebred daughter of Jesse James Jr and champion Alice K White, will face older distaffers for the first time in Wednesday’s 400-yard, $140,000-added New Mexico Filly and Mare Championship (RG1) at Zia Park. The New Mexico Filly and Mare Championship is one of two state-bred stakes and eight stakes scheduled for Wednesday’s third annual “Land of Enchantment” Day program at Zia Park. Post time for the first of 11 races is set for 12:15 p.m. (MST).
