RSS Feeds Sunday, July 31, 2011
Trainer Todd Fincher and jockey Juan Ochoa won three races on Sunday, as Ruidoso Downs Racetrack presented the Zia Festival races for New Mexico-breds.

Fincher and Ochoa teamed up to win two of the races – the 5 1/2-furlong, $50,000 Sierra Starlet Handicap (R) for 3-year-old fillies with Helen Nave's Comicsperfectstorm, and the 6-furlong, $50,000 Lincoln Handicap (R) for fillies and mares with Dale Taylor's Fan's Cat.

In addition, Fincher saddled the winner of $149,250 Rio Grande Senor Futurity (R), Desert Road, and Ochoa rode 11-1 longshot Thenew Normal to a 1 3/4-length victory in the $50,000 Road Runner Handicap (R) for 3-year-olds for owner and breeder Ray Simpson.

Fullofenergy was unsuccessful in his bid to win the 7 1/2-furlong, $50,000 Land of Enchantment Handicap (R) for the unprecedented fifth consecutive year. The 8-year-old Desert God gelding finished last after prompting the pace in the field of nine.

The 10-race Zia Festival card, which featured six restricted Thoroughbred and four Quarter Horse stakes worth $1.1 million, drew a crowd announced at 6,405. A total of $518,143 was wagered, including $243,788 on-track. The total handle was nearly 5 percent higher than last year's total handle of $494,352.
