Trainer Fred Danley Wins Three Races, W.L. Mooring Honored on Lineage Day
RSS Feeds Sunday, August 22, 2010
Trainer Fred Danley saddled the winners of three of the nine $40,000 stakes on the 21st annual Lineage Day card at The Downs at Albuquerque on Sunday.

Danley’s winning day began with the fourth race, as he sent out Captian Jacksboro to win the 400-yard Hard Twist Stakes (RG3) for owner and breeder David E. Barrett of Alto, New Mexico. The veteran trainer has won the Hard Twist a stakes-record seven times, including last year with Rabbit Revival.

Danley also won two Thoroughbred races with horses owned by his wife, Rita – the 5 ½-furlong Casey Darnell Pony Express Stakes (R) with the 12-year-old gelding Romeos Wilson, and the 6-furlong Chief Narbona Stakes (R) with I Am Lesters Gal.

Romeos Wilson’s victory was one for the ages – literally. Sent to post at odds of 10-1, the 12-year-old son of the Encino stallion Jack Wilson rallied to defeat Bonndaddy’s by one length under jockey Alejandro Medellin. The gelding’s victory was his 19th in 93 starts and fifth stakes win. He also won the Casey Darnell Pony Express two years ago.

Also, W.L. Mooring, the owner of Double L Farms in Bosque, New Mexico, was honored as the 2010 Lineage Legend during a ceremony after the 10th race. A trainer in New Mexico from 1971-87, Mooring founded Double L in ’88, and the farm has since been one of the leading consigners to the New Mexico-Bred Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse Yearling Sales at Ruidoso Downs.

A synopsis of every Lineage Day race follows. Complete coverage will appear in a future issue of the New Mexico Horse Breeders magazine.
