Trainer Todd Fincher Dominates Zia Festival Races

Todd Fincher had a big day Sunday at Ruidoso Downs, as the trainer won three of the six Thoroughbred stakes during the track’s Zia Festival.

Currently the leading Thoroughbred trainer at Ruidoso with 21 wins from 69 starters, Fincher won Sunday’s 7 1/2-furlong, $50,000 Land of Enchantment Handicap (R) with Hush’s Storm; the 5-furlong, $176,298 Mountain Top Futurity (R) with Ignored; and the 5 1/2-furlong, $50,000 Sierra Starlet Handicap (R) with Bryn’s Fancy Pants.

On the Quarter Horse side, Jacob J. Simmons III’s Hot Indy Chick won the day’s richest race, the 400-yard, $409,110 Zia Futurity (RG1). Jaime Leos rode the sorrel daughter of Jess A Chicks for trainer Cynthia Gonzalez.

A total of 131 New Mexico-bred Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses has been entered in Sunday’s New Mexico Cup races at Zia Park. Purses for the 12 races -- eight for Thoroughbreds and four for Quarter Horses -- will exceed $2 million, once again making New Mexico Cup day the richest state- or province-bred day of racing in North America.
