RSS Feeds Wednesday, July 12, 2017
Saturday’s 400-yard Zia Futurity (RG1) trials at Ruidoso Downs have drawn 94 New Mexico-bred 2-year-olds, topped by the undefeated Daddys Blushing.

The 10 Zia Futurity trials will be followed by four Zia Derby (RG2) trials. Post time for Ruidoso’s first race is set for 12 p.m. (MDT).

Daddys Blushing, a bay son of Big Daddy Cartel owned by Gary W. Hartstack of Houston, Texas, races from the barn of trainer Jackie Riddle. The gelding has won all four of his races and has earned $183,581, and his two stakes wins include a half-length victory in the 350-yard, $393,000 Mountain Top Futurity (RG3) for state-bred 2-year-olds on June 17.

Daddys Blushing drew post 8 and will be ridden by Francisco Calderon in the sixth trial. The gelding’s eight opponents in the sixth heat include Bigg Daddy, a gelded son of Big Daddy Cartel trained by Wes Giles for Too For Two. Bigg Daddy will be stretching out in distance off of his third-place finish, one length behind Daddys Blushing, in the Mountain Top Futurity.

Bigg Daddy drew post 8 and will be ridden by G.R. Carter Jr., American Quarter Horse racing’s all-time leading jockey.

Other prominent 2-year-olds entered in the Zia Futurity trials include Tempting Star Gazer and A Passion For Flashn. Trained by Wes Giles for owners Jose R. Espinosa and Jill Giles, Tempting Star Gazer has banked $63,915 from four outs, and his resume includes a third-place run, a half of a length behind winner Moneys A Maker, in the April 8, 300-yard New Mexican Spring Futurity (RG2) at Sunland Park.

Tempting Star Gazer drew post 2 and will be ridden by Cipriano Vidana in the first trial.

A Passion For Flashn is a First Moonflash colt trained by Martin Orona Sr. for RC Racing LLC. An earner of $34,160 from four races, A Passion For Flashn ran fourth, 1 1/4 lengths behind Daddys Blushing, in the Mountain Top Futurity.

Mauro Salcedo will ride A Passion For Flashn from post 3 in the seventh heat.

The 10 fastest qualifiers will meet in the July 30, $370,820 Zia Futurity final.
