As of midnight on Sunday morning, jockey Ricky Ramirez was listed in serious condition at San Juan Regional Medical Center in Farmington.
Ramirez sustained multiple injuries when his mount, First Place Seis, fell and unseated the rider in Saturday's first race at SunRay Park. Ramirez, one of the nation's leading Quarter Horse jockeys with nearly 500 wins and earnings of approximately $9 million during the last five years, was thrown forward onto the dirt. First Place Seis appeared to roll over Ramirez on the track.
Ramirez was transported by ambulance to San Juan Regional Medical Center, where a spokeswoman confirmed his condition. According to track physicians and emergency personnel, Ramirez was being treated for injuries to his ribs and hip.
