Zia Festival Recap
RSS Feeds Monday, July 31, 2017
Nine New Mexico-bred stakes races -- five for Thoroughbreds and four for Quarter Horses -- were contested at Ruidoso Downs on Sunday, as the track presented its annual Zia Festival day of racing.

A total of $896,825 in purses was paid out. One of the Quarter Horse stakes, the 400-yard Zia Derby (RG2) for state-bred 3-year-olds, offered a stakes-record purse of $176,005.

Bigg Daddy, a son of Big Daddy Cartel and champion Alice K White trained by Wes Giles for owner Too For Two, won the afternoon’s richest race, the 400-yard, $370,820 Zia Futurity (RG1). A $25,000 buy at last year’s Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale, the sorrel gelding banked the $155,745 winner’s share of the purse and his first career stakes victory.

No jockey recorded more than one win among the Zia Festival stakes. One Thoroughbred trainer, Johnathan Lemons, prepped multiple winners. Lemons won the 5 1/2-furlong, $50,000 Road Runner Handicap (R) for 3-year-olds with Mr. Mooch, and the 7 1/2-furlong, $50,000 Land of Enchantment Handicap (R) with Shotgun Wedding.

Track officials announced attendance at 4,721. A total of $221,275 was wagered on-track on the 12-race program, which included two 2-year-old maiden Quarter Horse races. Off-track handle reached $248,341.
