Zia Park Stakes Rescheduled for Wednesday

Zia Park Racetrack in Hobbs has received approval from the New Mexico Racing Commission to move its stakes races scheduled for this weekend to Wednesday, November 27.

Due to freezing conditions in the Hobbs area, Zia Park canceled its scheduled programs for Saturday and Sunday.

The rescheduled Quarter Horse stakes from Saturday are the 440-yard, $150,000 Zia Park Championship (G1) and 400-yard, $140,000-added New Mexico Fillies and Mares Championship (RG1).

The rescheduled Thoroughbred stakes from Sunday are the 1 1/16-mile, $300,000 Zia Park Oaks for 3-year-old fillies; the 1 1/8-mile, $200,000 Zia Park Derby for 3-year-olds; the 1 1/8-mile, $200,000 Zia Park Distance Championship for 3-year-olds and older; the 6-furlong, $55,000 Zia Park Distaff for fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and older; and the 1-mile, $120,000-added Eddy County Stakes (R) for New Mexico-bred 2-year-olds.

The NMRC also gave Zia Park permission to schedule a makeup card for Friday, November 29.

A memorial service for longtime New Mexico Horse Breeders’ Association trustee Rita J. Danley of Anthony will be held on Thursday, August 21, in the winner’s circle at Ruidoso Downs Racetrack. The service will begin at 11 a.m. (MDT) and be followed by a reception in the track’s All American Turf Club.

An unnamed colt by the Hennessy stallion Roll Hennessy Roll topped the Thoroughbred portion of the August 15-16 New Mexico-Bred Sale at the Ruidoso Downs Sale Pavilion. Consigned by Fred and Linda Alexander’s A & A Ranch of Anthony, New Mexico, the colt (Hip No. 229) was purchased on Saturday for $87,000 by Joe Dee Brooks, Scott Bryant, R.D. Hubbard, Brad King, and Dale Taylor.

Too Flash For You, a graded stakes winning New Mexico-bred son of First Moonflash, is the seventh-fastest qualifier for the Grade 1, $1,920,887 All American Derby at Ruidoso Downs on August 31.

Jess A Satin Flash, a colt by champion and 2013 leading freshman sire First Moonflash, sold for $60,000 to top Friday’s New Mexico-Bred Quarter Horse Yearling Sale at the Ruidoso Downs Sale Pavilion.
