The longest shot in the field of 10, Gene A. Voss’ Zoomin Away sprinted to a wire-to-wire, 1 ¼-length victory in Sunday’s $20,000 Ruidoso Juvenile Invitational Stakes at Ruidoso Downs.
Zoomin Away went 350 yards in :17.749 while recording her first win in three starts. David Pinon rode the gray daughter of Grade 1 winner Azoom for trainer Russell Harris.
Zoomin Away was bred by Voss, a resident of San Antonio, Texas, and the filly became the seventh stakes winner sired by Azoom, a son of the Takin On The Cash stallion Shazoom whose 72 starters have earned more than $2.014 million and include 2009 Rainbow Futurity (G1) winner Zoomin With Ease. Now 8 and a full brother to 2009 Harrah’s Entertainment Derby (G2) winner Vrrroom, Azoom stands for a $4,000 fee at Lazy E Ranch at Guthrie, Oklahoma.
Zoomin Away is also one of five winners from seven starters produced by Elegant Dasher, a stakes-winning daughter of First Down Dash who ran second in the ’95 Kansas Futurity (G1) at Bandera Downs in Texas. Now 17, Elegant Dasher broke track records at 350 and 440 yards at Remington Park in the late 1990s, and she foaled City Dasher, a gelding by Runaway Winner who ran second in the 2001 Los Alamitos Million Juvenile Invitational Stakes in California.
Zoomin Away’s third dam, Mickey Passum, was a stakes-winning palomino daughter of the Parr Passum stallion John Sain. A 1973 foal, Mickey Passum produced seven winners from nine starters, including the late stakes-winning Mito Paint (TB) gelding Painted Gold.
Sent to post at odds of nearly 22-1, Zoomin Away returned a $45.80 win mutuel. The $12,000 winner’s share of the Ruidoso Juvenile Invitational purse increased the filly’s earnings to $12,440.
Tortuga Tony ran second and was followed by 5-2 favorite Thriller Nights, Fast Red Rose, Fast Movin Vic, Whonew, Brookstones Gem, Don Herbie, Maximum Load, and Huginandzoomin.
A sorrel colt by Stel Corona owned and trained by Paul Jones of Cypress, California, Tortuga Tony was coming off of a nose victory at odds of 42-1 in a May 28 Ruidoso Futurity (G1) trial. Tortuga Tony earned $4,400 to boost his bankroll to $6,500.
Thriller Nights banked $2,000 to increase her earnings to $10,857 for her owner, Ron W. Hanna of Ruidoso, New Mexico. The sorrel filly by Teller Cartel, who has been favored in all three of her races, was coming off of wins in a West Texas Futurity (G1) trial on April 2 at Sunland Park and a Ruidoso Futurity trial on May 28.
