Zuccardi Draws Post 4 for Mountain Top QH Futurity Final
RSS Feeds Saturday, June 14, 2014
Crowson Racing’s Zuccardi drew post 4 for Saturday’s 350-yard, $340,697 Mountain Top Quarter Horse Futurity (RG3) for New Mexico-bred 2-year-olds at Ruidoso Downs.

A $15,000 supplement to the May 30 trials and a half brother to 2009 AQHA champion 3-year-old filly Alice K White, Zuccardi is coming off of a 2 3/4-length victory in the sixth of 10 heats. Roman Chapa has been named to ride the sorrel colt by Jesse James Jr for trainer Anna Marie Crowson.

Zuccardi finished eighth in his trouble-plagued debut, a West Texas Futurity (G1) trial at Sunland Park on March 21. The colt won his training race at Ruidoso Downs in early May, and that gave his connections the confidence to supplement him to the Mountain Top trials.

Zuccardi was acquired from breeder MJ Farms for $38,000 at last year’s New Mexico-Bred Sale at Ruidoso Downs. The colt’s nine opponents in the Mountain Top include morning-line favorite Dunagarees Version, a graded stakes-placed Winners Version gelding racing for Gary L. Thompson from the barn of trainer Emilio Cadena III.

Dungarees Version has earned $58,957 from four outs. Racing at Sunland Park last spring, the gelding ran second, a half of a length behind Winning Merlot, in the April 6, 300-yard New Mexican Spring Futurity (RG2) for state-bred 2-year-olds.

Manuel Gutierrez will ride Dungarees Version from post 9 on Saturday.

Jose Luis Ozuna’s Moonstruck Love, the second-fastest qualifier, will be ridden by Esgar Ramirez from post 7. Conditioned by Paul Jones, the brown colt by champion and 2013 leading freshman sire First Moonflash broke his maiden with a neck victory in the fifth Mountain Top trial.

The Mountain Top Futurity will be the final race on Ruidoso Downs’ nine-race program. Estimated post time for the race is set for 4:28 p.m. (MDT).

The complete lineup, in post position order including jockey assignments and morning-line odds -- Fire The Queen (Roberto Valero), 10-1; JM Blu Moonflash (Alonso Rivera), 8-1; Quemados Version (Jaime Parga Leos), 8-1; Zuccardi (Roman Chapa), 5-1; Mendoza (Felipe Garcia-Luna), 12-1; Astica (Tanner Thedford), 15-1; Moonstruck Love (Esgar Ramirez), 6-1; Wise Option (G.R. Carter Jr.), 12-1; Dungarees Version (Manuel Gutierrez), 3-1; and Kiki Kiki (Sergio Becerra Jr.), 7-2.
