Zulu Dragon Filly Leads NM Spring Futurity Qualifiers
RSS Feeds Saturday, April 9, 2016
Running Dragon, a homebred filly by Zulu Dragon, made her debut with a 1 1/2-length victory in the fifth of seven New Mexican Spring Futurity (RG2) trials at Sunland Park on Friday.

Ridden by Jose Enrique Ortiz, Running Dragon went 300 yards in :15.468 while defeating fourth-fastest qualifier Daddys Allstar by a half of a length. Juan M. Gonzalez trains the gray filly for the By By JJ Limited Partnership.

Second-fastest qualifier Big Spurs won the seventh heat by 1 3/4 lengths in his first career out. Under jockey Jaime Leos, who rode the gray Big Daddy Cartel colt for owner Astorga Racing LLC and trainer Miguel Castillo, Big Spurs stopped the timer in :15.492.

Hubaldo Solis of Peralta, New Mexico, bred Big Spurs.

Castillo also prepped the third-fastest qualifier, Daddy Queen Cartel, for owner Jose A. Enriquez. Ridden by Felipe Garcia-Luna, the bay daughter of Big Daddy Cartel won the fourth heat by 1 3/4 lengths in :15.527.

Daddy Queen Cartel was bred by Yaneth Cabrera.

Big Daddy Cartel and Zulu Dragon were the top sires in the New Mexican Spring Futurity trials with four and three qualifiers, respectively. Big Daddy Cartel is a 7-year-old winning son of Corona Cartel and the graded stakes winning Mr Eye Opener mare Miss Racy Eyes, and he was a finalist in the 2011 All American (G1) and Rainbow (G1) futurities at Ruidoso Downs. Zulu Dragon is a 9-year-old son of all-time leading sire First Down Dash and 2003 New Mexican Spring Futurity (RG1) winner Hidden Dragon.
