Mitey Moon, a homebred filly by AQHA champion First Moonflash racing for Debra Jean Laney, is the fastest qualifier for the June 15, $356,980 Mountain Top Futurity (R) for New Mexico-bred 2-year-olds at Ruidoso Downs.

The New Mexico Horse Breeders' Association honored its 2012 Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse champions during its Zia Awards Banquet at the Marriott Uptown Hotel in Albuquerque on January 24.

Carol On My Mind, a Corona Cartel filly signed by Lazy E Ranch of Guthrie, Oklahoma, sold for $520,000 to top the Ruidoso Select Yearling and Broodmare Sale, held August 31-September 2 at the Ruidoso Downs Horse Sale Pavilion. A total of 322 horses were sold for $15,229,600, compared to 310 who sold for $13,726,700 last year. This year's average of $47,297 represented a 7-percent increase over the $44,280 average for 2011.

A total of 21 accredited New Mexico-bred Quarter Horse yearlings have been consigned to the Ruidoso Select Yearling and Broodmare Sale, to be held August 31-September 2 at the Ruidoso Downs Horse Sale Pavilion.

Avenue Of Flags, a Grade 2-placed stallion by 1977 Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew, was euthanized following an accident in his paddock on May 14. He was 22. At the time of his death, Avenue Of Flags was standing at James Wasson’s Winner’s Circle Farm near Las Cruces, New Mexico, where he had been moved to for the 2010 breeding season.

Daddy Warbucks, a 6-year-old son of Valid Expectations, has been retired from racing and will stand at Hourigan Horse Farm near Anthony, New Mexico.
